Ghost Patina

Summary: The Ghost trait is defined by a striking visual contrast between Abe’s portrait and the surrounding field – usually created by a complete or nearly complete patina that renders the figure spectral, as if emerging through a veil. Ghost Cents possess an immediately recognizable look: the portrait appears luminous against a darkened ground, or inversely, a shadowed figure floats in a bright field. This visual inversion gives the coin its haunting presence and lasting appeal among collectors.

Definition: A Cent qualifies as Ghost when a full or near-full patina creates a distinct separation between the portrait and its background. The effect must read instantly – a clear body-field contrast that gives Abe an ethereal or apparition-like appearance. Partial toning or random patchwork coloration does not qualify.

Visual Character: Often darkened fields surrounding a lighter silhouette, though inverse forms exist. Surfaces are matte to satin, with smooth tonal transitions that suggest depth. The phenomenon can result from uniform oxidation interrupted by slight surface differences over the relief.
